New Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu says she will prioritize water and children as she prepares to take on the new role.
Currently, more than 40 Indigenous communities across Canada find themselves under boil-water advisories, something Hajdu calls unacceptable.
While no timeline for addressing those advisories has been set, the Minister says she will get to work on understanding the barriers and developing a realistic timeline.
Hajdu also says she sees no point in Canada continuing to fight against compensation for Indigenous children.
A human rights tribunal recently ordered Canada to pay 40 thousand dollars to every child impacted by the on-reserve child welfare system since 2006.
Canada’s deadline to file an appeal is Friday, though Hajdu says continuing to challenge the order is in no one’s interest.
