New Legislative changes announced yesterday will help to advance Indigenous jurisdiction over education.
First Nations participating in the education jurisdiction initiative will soon have the ability to certify and regulate teachers in their jurisdictions, with the support of the Provincial government.
These changes also ensure that the First Nations Education Authority always has representation on the BC Teachers’ Council, the group responsible for establishing certification standards.
These new changes were co-developed alongside the First Nations Steering Committee, with direction from represented Nations.
The new legislation allows First Nations educators to work with the province to create the best outcomes possible for First Nations students.
