Two northerners are among 8 new winners announced at the 13th annual Indigenous Business Awards.
Since 2008, the BC Achievement Foundation have handed the awards out to extraordinary Indigenous entrepreneurs to inspire business and achievement.
A Prince Rupert-based non-profit, The Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a Economic Development Corporation, took home the Community-Owned Business of the Year Award.
GNEDC delivers language and cultural revitalization programs, and recently began operating a state-of-the-art hydroponics greenhouse, allowing them to offer fresh greens to the community via subscription box.
The surplus of that endeavour is donated on a weekly basis to Nisga’a elders.
In Moberly Lake, former Saulteau Chief Ken Cameron was awarded the Award for Distinction for Lifetime Achievement.
From the start, Cameron’s goal has been to alter the perception of Indigenous companies by promoting training and employment.
He has supported green projects such as the Twin Sisters Native Plants Nursery, those which protect women in need like the Linda and Krystina House, and industry and construction projects such as 4 Evergreen Resources.
This years awardees will be honoured via a series of digital campaigns as they join the more than 200 existing awardees.
