First Nations are three to five times more likely to experience food insecurity than the average Canadian, according to the findings of a new report.
Researchers from the AFN, University of Ottawa, and University of Montreal, released the key findings from their First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study, yesterday.
The study found that traditional food sources remain key to First Nations health and development.
But, environmental degradation, socioeconomic, systemic, and regulatory barriers have made those sources more difficult to harvest.
92 First Nations from across Canada participated in the 10 year study, which has led to 6 primary recommendations.
Those recommendations include: promoting First Nations rights, prioritizing protecting First Nations lands, build capacity to eliminate nutritional barriers, improve government partnerships and collaborations, support further research in to food insecurity, and create a First Nations-led task force to implement these recommendations.
