Two new recently completed Taan Forest Limited Partnership projects will help restore habitats and create food sources for animals on Haida Gwaii.
Thanks to 1.6 million dollars in funding from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the two projects helped to restore over 300 hectares of ecosystems.
One of those projects saw close to 185 hectares of bench area along the Yakoun River restored over six months.
Historically the bench was logged right to the river to allow easier transport of logs, but restoring the area creates river habitats, and food for wildlife.
The second project focused on pruning and spacing trees over a 5.2 km radius of forest to allow trees to grow faster, bringing sunlight to the forest floor, and opening flight paths for wildlife.
Local crews from Skidegate and Old Massett assisted in both projects.
Indigenous insight was also sought to utilize the experience of the Haida People, and their respect for the land.
