While Covid continues to fill headlines, another kind of pandemic persists in the province.
According to a report from the BC Coroner’s Office, July was the second most deadly month ever when it comes to illicit drug overdoses.
184 suspected deaths were attributed to overdoses over the month, putting the year to date total over 1,200.
Last year, BC set the record for overdose deaths with 1,734 for the whole year.
Minister for Mental Health and Addictions Sheila Malcolmson took to the podium yesterday to urge people to look out for those around them.
She says that, on top of government efforts, friends of drug users should educate themselves on prevention and safe consumption.
She closed by saying she feels the grief of everyone struggling and she will continue to push for life altering changes to the system.
