According to the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, the Canadian government has failed in their duty to adequately consult Indigenous Peoples living off-reserve.
As a result, they have filed a legal complaint against the Liberal Government with the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
In the complaint, the CAP says the government has decided to only consult with three recognized Indigenous groups, none of which represent off-reserve or non-status residents.
The CAP considers itself to be the voice of off-reserve Indigenous Canadians, but say they have hardly been involved in consultations with the government.
This is despite off-reserve Indigenous residents making up 70 percent of Canada`s Indigenous population.
The complaint is being submitted under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
