A limited Sockeye Salmon opening that was been placed on the Chilcotin river has received an extension, meaning it will now be open for a First Nations Fishery until September 8th.
A Tsilhqot’in tribal chair named Chief Joe Alphonse stated that the rebound of this year’s salmon batch is experiencing is the best his nation has seen in five years.
Some credit for the nation being able to fish this season should probably go to Alphonse as well since he contacted Fisheries and Oceans Canada in order to get them to open up the Fishery closure they had put out earlier this year.
This fishing season was important to have since Alphonse also mentioned that the past few years for the nation had been tough due to declining moose stocks, and along with deer habitat being burned up in wildfires, their diet had been severely impacted.
