A few different First Nations in BC are asking to participate in the revising of the province’s forest policy so that it reflects a shared and prosperous future for both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities.
A press release that was sent out last Tuesday made note of the fact that the Province had written to these First Nations back on July 6th with an outline of how Indigenous people would be engaging with the Government in order to help get a new initiative called Modernizing Forest Policy moving forward. This policy has been based off of a previously written Forest Intentions paper from Forest Minister Katrine Conroy from June of this year.
A spokesperson of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource and Operations stated that the intentions paper being released publicly marks at least a starting point for potential discussions on modernizing the forest policy in B.C.
