The B-C Human Rights Tribunal says it has granted intervener status to the Union of B-C Indian Chiefs in a case over alleged discrimination by Vancouver police against an Indigenous man and his granddaughter.
The complaint was launched by Maxwell Johnson after he was detained by police officers at a Bank of Montreal Branch in downtown Vancouver while attempting to open a bank account for his granddaughter.
Johnson is a member of the Heiltsuk Nation.
The nation and the union say they welcome the tribunal’s decision and are pleased with the level of scope granted.
