A Cranbrook-area First Nation has purchased a parcel of land considered an important archeological site along Columbia Lake.
The Ktunaxa Nation Council announced the purchase of the site that is less than a hectare in size but contains paintings, or pictographs, and is also the location where other artifacts have been found.
Jesse Thomas, the archeology coordinator for the nation, says the site is evidence that their people have been on the land for generations.
While no one is certain about the meaning of the pictographs, Thomas believes they tell stories of past battles between the Ktunaxa and Blackfoot nations.
