According to fisheries stock assessment biologist Robert Bison who is in charge of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Interior Fraser Wild Steelhead conservation program, the Steelhead population is currently no where near the numbers that they were at previously.
A steady stream of funding from the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund has made it so the Steelhead monitoring program can keep running, including the $98,677 they got for this year. The program has been both tracking and monitoring Steelhead for over 40 years at this point.
Bison also stated that the strongest evidence of Steelhead decline at this time is that most of this particular decline has been an unintended consequence of restoring the populations of other marine mammal species.
Apparently, there has also been some evidence of off-shore events in the marine environment that are negatively impacting the Steelhead population.
