The federal government is providing another 321-million dollars to support Indigenous communities searching for burial sites at former residential schools.
Federal Justice Minister David Lametti made the announcement this morning, saying a special representative will also be appointed to work with Indigenous groups to change federal laws and policies related to the handling of unmarked graves.
He says Canada does not have the necessary legal tools needed to deal with those complex issues.
Some of the funds will also be used to manage possible demolition, rehabilitation or reconstruction of former residential schools and 107-million dollars will provide essential mental health, cultural and emotional support programs for residential school survivors and their families.
