A long and solemn march from Yukon to Kamloops ended today as members of Warriors Walk for Healing Nations reached Tk̓emlups te Secwepemc territory.
Participants from First Nations including the Vuntut Gwich’in, Tlingit, and Kaska, set out from Whitehorse in late June to honour children who died at Indigenous residential schools, including the Kamloops Indian Residential School.
What are believed to be the unmarked graves of former students at the school were identified earlier this year and similar discoveries have been made at other now-shuttered schools in Canada, including on Penelakut Island off eastern Vancouver Island.
Participants of the Whitehorse-to-Kamloops march were honored this afternoon at a ceremony marking their arrival.
