The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy announced back on Thursday that about $3.2 million in funding is being given to three projects in order to clear up north coast waters, including Haida Gwaii.
Misty Isles Economic Development Society (MIEDS), who is in a partnership with the Haida Nation, has gotten a $2.3 million portion of funding to clean up more than 200 tonnes of marine debris covering about 400 km of coastline around the group of islands from the provincial Clean Coast Clean Waters initiative. This project is expected to create more than 140 jobs in the community.
Jennifer Rutt, the executive director of MIEDS stated that the organization is very excited to be at the helm of a project this important.
Misty Isles Economic Development Society will be engaging with local youth individuals as well as community programs in order to hire more than 100 youth to be part of the project.
