The federal government has signed a fisheries agreement with the eight Coastal First Nations in the north and central coast and Haida Gwaii.
The Fisheries Resources Reconciliation Agreement provides funding to access commercial fishing opportunities for the nations.
Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan said in a statement that the agreement demonstrates Canada’s commitment to reconciliation and to review Indigenous rights.
Coastal First Nations Chief Marilyn Slett says the deal will give their people significant say in the management of the oceans, while also giving their members a chance to take part in the maritime economy.
