A return to hot, dry weather and a lightning storm near Grand Forks in southern B-C are just some of the issues complicating the ongoing battle against wildfires.
Environment Canada maps show lightning strikes peppered the Grand Forks area this morning while the B-C Wildfire Service says the number of active fires has climbed to nearly 270 — with roughly 30 new starts recorded in the last two days.
In the Cariboo, increased fire activity forced a late-night evacuation of 92 parcels of land in a huge area west of Alexis Creek as a 70-square-kilometre blaze near Highway 20 pushed east.
There’s also concern about more lightning storms over the 325-square kilometre White Rock Lake fire northwest of Vernon, where four regional districts and the Okanagan Indian Band have already posted evacuation orders for properties along the fire’s flanks.
