The federal government is working with the Shuswap Nation to revitalize Indigenous legal systems.
Justice Minister David Lametti and Wayne Christian, the Tribal Chief of Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, met today to confirm federal support for a project to increase community knowledge of Secwepemc traditional legal principles.
The project, in partnership with the University of Victoria’s Indigenous Law Research Unit, supports the launch of Indigenous laws in the Secwepemc Nation and will provide practical applications of legal traditions related to lands, natural resources and citizenship.
The initiative — which will receive 500-thousand dollars in federal funding — aligns with the Government of Canada’s response to one of the calls to action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
