The B.C. government has picked 21 sites that will be used for research into the legacy of residential schools that were created for Indigenous children who were forced to attend for nearly a whole century.
Indigenous relations minister Murray Rankin said the $12 million fund that was announced back towards the end of June is being offered to communities not to far way from three former “Indian hospital” sites along with 18 former residential schools.
Rankin also stated that the funds will be dedicated to mental health support for communities that were traumatized by the recent discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools like the ones at Kamloops, Cranbrook, and Kuper Island, with up to $475,000 available for an accessible application process.
The three hospitals that were identified are the Indian Hospital at Chilliwack, the Millar Bay Tuberculosis Hospital in Prince Rupert and the Nanaimo Indian Hospital.
