Residents in some coastal communities of northwestern B-C spent several anxious hours overnight waiting for word about a possible tsunami.
Alerts sounded after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit off the Alaska Peninsula last evening, followed by two very strong aftershocks.
Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of Alaska and alerts were posted as far away as Hawaii and Samoa — but Emergency Management B-C was able to issue an all-clear early this morning.
Skeena M-L-A Ellis Ross — who was at his home in Kitamaat Village, south of Kitimat, helping direct his fellow community members to higher ground — says the emergency response in his community went well.
