While the town of Kitimat is scaling back its traditional Canada Day Festivities, they will be going ahead with the Every Child Matters Memorial Soccer Tournament, for Canada Day and the coming weekend.
As the province eases up the Covid-19 restrictions to allow outdoor gatherings up to 5000 people, organizers are hoping for a good turnout to show support for the children and victims of residential schools. Spectators are encouraged to wear orange and organizers will be giving out 400 orange shirts to players, coaches, refs, and the fans who attend the opening ceremonies. Those ceremonies will begin at 11am tomorrow with a blessing from a hereditary Haisla Chief and a performance from the Braid Singers and Dancers as well.
An exhibition match at Riverlodge will start the tournament at 12 noon on July 1, the People of the Snow women’s soccer team will host the Kitwanga Wildcats. A pair of men’s teams will follow and then the tournament begins at 7:00 p.m.
There are roughly nine teams from local regions and as far away as Saskatchewan committed to the double elimination tournament, with awards going to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
