The Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce hosted a virtual meeting with B.C.’s Finance Minister Selina Robinson.
The meeting was held regarding the upcoming budget 2021/22. The upcoming budget will be focused on the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemics and the ongoing challenges. Some of the things that we’ll see in the budget include, $4 billion in new funding over 3 years, which includes $3.1 billion to improve the quality of health and mental health care for people.
There will be 1.9 billion over three years to deliver services including education and transportation, free transit for youth aged 12 and under, affordable housing and expanding the universal child care prototype program.
There was $290 million announced over three years to support reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and continued implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples act. As well as 400 new child care spaces, funding to implement cultural safety and humility training and Indigenous liasons across mental health and addiction services.
Some improvements we will see in the north include, supportive housing in Prince Rupert, transition second stage and affordable housing in Kitimat, the replacement of the Mills Memorial hospital, improvements to sections 16 in Burns Lake and Smithers and Coast Mountain College campus improvements in Terrace.
The budget vote is taking place today.
