The B.C. Government is encouraging anyone who has moss balls in their aquarium to inspect the plant for invasive zebra mussels. The highly invasive species has reportedly been found in a number of locations through the province.
Over the past weekend, conservation officers conducted more than 600 inspections at retail aquatic pet and plant stores and found the invasive species at multiple locations, including here in Terrace. People have also reported finding the mussel-infested moss balls in their aquariums across western Canada.
Currently the Conservation Officer Service is investigating how widespread the problem of mussel-infested moss balls may be.
If anyone finds zebra mussels they’re encouraged to call the Report all Poachers and Polluters hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
