The federal and provincial governments have confirmed that B.C. Ferries will be eligible for transit funding of the Safe Restart Agreement.
The agreement was originally announced on July 16 as a key part of the Covid-19 recovery effort. The government’s decision on how to apply a portion of the federal funding for B.C. Ferries will be based on putting the public’s interest first. Including, ensuring fares remain affordable through the pandemic recovery and essential ferry service is maintained. Giving people the tools they need to be able to travel to and from coastal communities.
The province is working with B.C. Ferries. TransLink and B.C. Transit to understand the operational and financial challenges resulting from the pandemic before determining what level of relief may be considered.
A task force with representation from the province, the BC Ferry Authority board and BC Ferries Services Inc. board are working alongside B.C. Ferries to help them bring forward a comprehensive relief proposal to the province.
