Fort St. John RCMP are warning people of a phone scam as RCMP see a sudden rise in fraudulent activity.
Reports of residents receiving fraudulent calls has been on the rise. Residents are reporting that the numbers they are receiving calls from vary including the Fort St. John RCMP detachment’s number. Upon receiving the call residents are asked to provide Google Play cards or some other gift cards in order to pay back taxes or other penalties or fines. One person came to the detachment with a handful of cards.
The scammers are combining multiple techniques including, CRA phone scams and caller ID spoofing where they can mimic another number to hide the original callers number. The use of the RCMP number adds credibility to the call, misleading unexpecting residents.
The Fort St. John RCMP want to remind residents that no government agency, Service Canada or the RCMP will ever call demanding money for any reason.
If you have fallen victim to a scam or fraud of this type in the past week you’re asked to call the Fort St. John RCMP.
