On October 18th The Ts’ilhqot’in Nation celebrated the grand opening of its solar farm. The farm is located west of Williams Lake on what is known as Riverwest Sawmill. The solar farm is the largest of its kind and has been entirely developed, built and operated by the Ts’ilhqot’in Nation.
The solar farm initiative started five years ago and experienced some challenges including financing, authorization, training and harsh weather conditions. The farm has 3,456 solar modules that will send electricity to the B.C. Hydro grid.
The solar farm will connect into power lines along highway 20 and is expected to generate 1,500 megawatt hours of electricity per year during its expected 25 year lifetime.
