Increasing and unforseen costs have forced Hazelton’s revamped Upper Skeena Recreation Centre to delay its opening.
Estimated costs for the facility currently sit at 21.4 million dollars, a far cry from the original 16 million dollar estimate.
Those increases are largely due to the decision to turn the facility in to a full on leisure centre, after originally being proposed as simply an ice arena.
According to the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine, the new Northern Capital Planning Grant offered by the project could fill some funds, but they must first set up a specific reserve fund to access it.
The District now hopes to be able to open the facility by the fall.
