Book Lovers’ Night Out is a different kind of book club because drop-ins are always welcome. Join us for lively, low-cost monthly gatherings built around a love of books, discussion and companionship. We will be discussing The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, as well as planning our titles for the year. Meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Smithers Public Library. The Prince George Public Library presents the return of their beloved Homework Help tutoring program.  Tutors work with small groups of students in grades 3-12 to build skills in English, Math and Sciences. Students will be paired with an experienced tutor and university student for their weekly session.   Free, one-hour tutoring sessions will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and are booked on a first come, first served basis with sessions starting on December 5th.    Sessions will be offered in-person at both the Bob Harkins Branch, downtown, and the Nechako  Branch, in the Hart, as well as online.   Submit a registration request for a tutoring session online  at www.pgpl.ca/homework-help or call 250-563-9251 ext. 100.    Offering no barrier learning support to community youth through the Homework Help program  supports PGPL’s vision of fostering a vibrant, inclusive, thriving community, and its mission to  build community resilience by creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for every person to  read, connect, and share.

Strengthening Families Together offers education and support to family members, friends and caregivers of a loved one with a mental illness. This 6-week program meets once a week for approximately 2.5 hours, during which families, caregivers and friends learn more about mental illness and the mental health system. They are given an opportunity to develop and practice healthy coping strategies for dealing with some of the difficulties they may be facing. Families will also learn: * effective communication skills to help handle new challenges * how to deal with stigma * how to resist messages of self-blame Refreshments will be provided and there is an optional celebration dinner after completion of program. Join award-winning author Robin Stevenson for an in-depth conversation about her experiences as a champion of free expression in a time of unprecedented book bans and challenges—including several of her own published works.

“Haisla Artists: An Indigenous Art Exhibition” is a one-of-a-kind art exhibit featuring diverse multimedia works by over 20 Haisla artists from Kitamaat and beyond. It is the first-ever all-Haisla community art show put on by the Kitimat Museum & Archives, and we are excited and honoured to be the venue for this incredible, innovative, and dynamic art.  We invite all members of our community to attend the opening reception on Friday, May 10th, 7:00 p.m., at the Lower Level of the City Centre Mall. Come and listen to the opening speakers, watch a performance by the Haisla Braid Singers & Dancers, see images from our archival collection, and enjoy light refreshments. Everyone is welcome.  The Haisla, meaning “dwellers downriver,” have occupied this territory since time immemorial. Today’s Haisla Nation is an amalgamation of two historic bands, the Kitamaat and the Kitlope. The Haisla Nation is centered on Kitamaat Village, home to about 700 of the Nation’s 2000+ members; the rest of whom live in Kitimat, Terrace, Prince Rupert, Vancouver, the United States, and elsewhere. The Haisla artistic tradition has flourished for millennia and remains integral to the culture.  The show will be on display in our Upstairs Gallery during Museum opening hours from May 8th until July 13th 2024. Admission to the Museum is by donation. We are wheelchair-accessible by lift. 

Lightwire Theater has been featured as a semi-finalist on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and winner if Tru TV’s Fake Off. The group combines Theater and technology to bring stories to life in complete darkness and is internationally recognized for its signature brand of electroluminescent artistry. Tickets available at Misty River Books and at the door $30 all adults $20 children age 3-12

The BC and Yukon Book Prizes are bringing their author tour to Smithers! Join us for a reading and Q&A with two of this year's finalists: Emelia Symington-Fedy (author of Skid Dogs) and Wanda John-Kehewin (author of Hopeless in Hope). The BC and Yukon Book Prizes celebrate the achievements of British Columbia and Yukon writers, illustrators and publishers of various genres.
