Twelve energy companies in the Peace Region are having their water permits suspended as the province looks to deal with an on-going drought in the region.
A level 3 drought was declared in the Region last month following low precipitation in July, and little rain in the forecast through September.
In light of this, the BC Oil and Gas Commission has suspended a total of 20 licenses for companies drawing from watersheds in the region.
Suspended permits include those for Doig River, Blueberry River, Beatton River, Osborne River, Sukunka River, and Kiskatinaw River, as well as tributaries of the Chief Sikanni, Fort Nelson, and Muskwa Rivers.
While the suspensions are indefinite, energy companies will be able to utilize the main bodies of the Peace River and Dinosaur Lake while they are in place.
