Today marks the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, honouring the cultures, diversity, and histories of Indigenous Peoples.
This year’s theme is the Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.
It is a day to honour the crucial leadership role Indigenous women play, despite often facing gender, class, and ethnic discrimination in their home countries.
In addition, women are often under-represented, disproportionately negatively affected by decisions made on their behalf, and are often victims of gender-based violence.
Today is a day to spread awareness for the difficult challenges they face, as well as the strength they display in fighting through it to make a difference in their communities.
