Police in Canada saw a 27 percent increase in the number of hate crimes reported in 2021, following a 36 percent increase in 2020.
Hate crimes targeting religion saw the largest increase in 2021, going up by 67 percent compared to the prior year.
Those based on sexual orientation also saw a 64 percent rise, after a 3 percent drop the year before, and those based on ethnicity rose by 6 percent.
But the most drastic difference can be seen when comparing 2019, which saw 1,951 total reports of hate crimes, to 2021, which saw 3,360, a 72 percent increase.
According to a report from StatsCan, the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine are the largest contributing factors to ethnic and sexual orientation incidents.
They also say the 260 percent increase in hate crimes against Catholics stems from the public outrage following th discovery of unmarked graves at the Kamloops Residential School.
