Coastal GasLink has decided not to press civil contempt charges against 6 Indigenous land defenders arrested along their pipeline route.
They come from among the 27 arrested for violating an injunction order while opposing the pipeline in November of last year.
In June, the Prosecution Service decided to pursue criminal contempt charges against 15 of those, and added another 4 earlier this month.
Initially, however, the Service had opted against pressing criminal charges, before being being invited to do so by CGL’s lawyers.
At that time, they left the door open for CGL to pursue civil contempt charges against the land defenders.
However, civil charges cannot be pressed against those facing criminal charged, and two individuals were already cleared.
That left CGL until yesterday to decide whether or not to pursue charges against the remaining 6, a prospect they have now decided against.
