A new permit will help the Fort Nelson First Nation to continue efforts to repurpose a mature gas field to produce cleaner energy.
An initial investment from the province in 2019 allowed the Nation to launch their Tu Deh-Kah Geothermal Project at Clarke Lake.
That project aims to convert the existing gas field into a geothermal electricity generation plant, capable of producing 6 to 15 megawatts of clean energy.
Under the new permit, the Nation will be able to expand exploratory work and planning for the project to an additional 6,700 hectares of adjacent land.
That permit also grants geothermal resource rights over the area to Nation-owned development company Deh Tai LP.
With the permit secured, Deh Tai can apply to the Oil and Gas Commission for well authorization to begin conducting exploratory work.
