A woman who had accused ex-BC Cabinet Minister and Tl’azt’en Hereditary Chief Ed John of sexual assault has decided to put her case on hold.
John had been facing four charges related to sexual assault stemming from incidents in 1974.
According to the accuser, the incidents all took place while John was working as Director of the Doh Day De Claa Friendship Centre, when he was 25 and she was 13.
She gave her initial testimony yesterday, to which John’s defense pointed out a number of inconsistencies between her accounts to police and in front of the court.
After a tough cross-examination, the woman requested a break, afterwhich her lawyer would return and announce they would not be proceeding with the case.
According to the Prosecution Service, the charges were stayed due to there no longer being a substantial likelihood of conviction.
