In an announcement from this morning, government officials revealed that they are establishing the National Advisory Committee on Residential Schools Missing Children and Unmarked Burials.
This committee’s purpose is to ensure that Indigenous communities will be able to access independent, trusted and expert information to aid their search for the unmarked graves of the children who did not make it home from Residential Schools.
The committee has many people that specialize in different fields such as forensics, archeology, Indigenous laws and cultural protocols, archival research and criminal investigations.
A circle of survivors of the schools will also help the committee members conduct themselves in the best possible manner.
The inaugural committee meeting was held yesterday where the members talked about how to best support the work already being undertaken by Survivors, their families and communities.
The government also mentioned that this committee’s formation is very important for furthering reconciliation.
