Forestry researchers from the University of British Columbia are calling for a more proactive approach to prepare for wildfires.
After decades of research into climate change and its impact on fire-prone landscapes, the researchers say wildfires aren’t going away, and we need to learn to co-exist with them.
One such researcher from UBC’s Faculty of Forests, Dr Kira Hoffman, says for individuals that means knowing your community and planning for emergencies.
She also says residents should get to know their community’s protection plans, and broach the topic with leaders if one doesn’t exist.
Alongside fellow UBC wildfire experts Dr Lori Daniels and Dr Kelsey Copes-Gerbitz, Dr Hoffman suggests we need to develop ecologically and culturally appropriate solutions to address wildfire risks.
In they say integrating Indigenous stewardship and practices, such as cultural burning, is also key to a sustainable risk-management approach.
