A delegation of Chiefs led by the Indian Resource Council met with investors in Toronto today in an effort to attract funds for Indigenous energy projects.
Representing more than 130 Nations, the Council advocates for Indigenous involvement in resource and energy projects, rather than opposition.
Through the meetings, they hope to secure capital funds which they say have long been denied to the communities they represent.
IRC President Stephen Buffalo says that First Nations have solutions for protecting the environment while ensuring they can provide affordable energy.
Because of this, and the economic success of LNG, and hydrogen and carbon capture projects in recent years, he says divesting in fossil fuels is actively harming Indigenous economic prospects.
Their position contrasts that of groups such as the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, who aim to end investments in all fossil fuel projects on their territory.
Recently, they have banded together with Hollywood celebrities and other supporters in an effort to convince RBC to divest from the Coastal GasLink pipeline project.
