Urgent and immediate changes are required at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital, according to the Tŝilhqot’in National Government.
Last week, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson brought the issues at the hospital before Legislature, citing a letter of non-confidence in the operating room’s administrators.
That letter included concerns over a toxic work environment, and the undermining of surgeons, physicians and other staff.
But it also reiterated concerns over systemic racism and discrimination already revealed Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s 2020 In Plain Sight report.
Since then, the TNG says little to nothing has been done to address the issues and enact the recommendations of that report.
Chief Joe Alphonse says the hospital is in a crisis situation, which is forcing people to stay home in pain, rather than seek medical care.
In light of this, the Nation is joining the calls from Doerkson, and others, for an independent investigation in to the Williams Lake-based hospital’s administrators.
