FortisBC nearly tripled its Renewable Natural Gas supply in 2021, and it’s looking to do it again in 2022.
Increasing RNG supply is one of the key points in the energy provider’s Clean Growth Pathway, aiming to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Last year saw their supply increase by 184 percent over 2020, the largest annual change in the program’s history.
By the end of the year, they are hoping to triple that again, bringing enough RNG to fuel more than 43,000 homes in BC.
With 25 supply agreements signed since 2020, the utility expects to have contracts in place to cover 11 percent of their total gas supply by 2025.
To further decrease emissions, Fortis also invested close to $120 million in energy efficiency and conservation programs in 2021.
It is estimated that those investments resulted in reductions of close to 69,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
