In order to take further action against racism and discrimination, the Province of BC has decided to introduce the anti-racism data act.
This act will collect data and use it to determine which provincial services and programs need addressing when it comes to this issue.
The data will also be used to better determine meet the needs of Black, Indigenous and other racialized BC residents.
This is the first act in Canadian history to be co-developed with Indigenous people.
Another big reason for the creation of the act is due to the feedback of over 13,000 BC residents that was provided through community-led engagement sessions.
The main takeaway that BC got from those sessions is that gathering demographic data like faith, ethnic origin, gender identity and ancestry would bring positive change to the province and help build trust between the government and Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities.
The Provincial government will also create a data advisory committee to work with the government and help them figure out how to implement the act properly.
