A new agreement, signed yesterday, could see two Mackenzie area First Nations gain further control over forestry on their territory.
Canfor has signed a letter of intent to sell its Mackenzie forestry tenure to the McLeod Lake Indian Band, and Tsay Keh Dene Nation.
Once the transfer is approved by the Minister of Forests and Lands, the agreement will allow the Nations to assert oversight and control over resource development on their land.
Included in the agreement is a section allowing the future subdivision of the tenure between the two Nations.
In addition, Canfor has signed a second agreement to sell its Mackenzie site, plant, and equipment to Peak Renewables at a total cost of 70 million dollars.
