Swaths of friends, family, neighbours, and more gathered in Quesnel yesterday for a ceremony to honour a lost, but beloved member of the community.
Dubbed “No More Stolen Sisters” the ceremony was held to honour the life of Takla woman Carmelita Abraham, who was found murdered last week, as well as other Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Held in front of the Willow Inn in Quesnel, the event brought in members of First Nations from across BC.
Smudging and singing was performed near the entrance to the Inn.
A custom made ribbon skirt made by Gladys Michell and Shelly Samuels was raffled off to support funeral expenses, and Carmelita’s daughter.
Last Friday, RCMP announced they had arrested 51 year-old Joseph Simpson and charged him in Abraham’s murder.
He is being held in custody until his next court appearance on February 15th.
