Investigators at the University of Northern BC have come up with a new method to track the melting of glaciers over time.
Using satellite imagery from the US Geological Survey Landsat program, researchers were able to map changes in glaciers between 1984 and 2020.
Changes to glacier extent, as well as proglacial lake growth were measured at yearly intervals across the monitored period in BC and Alberta.
They found that glaciers shrank seven times faster during the period between 2011 and 2020 than they did over the full reporting period.
Glaciers represent a critical source of stored freshwater in western Canada.
