BC’s Attorney General, David Eby, has tabled two new pieces of legislation which seek to advance the recognition of Indigenous Rights.
Bill 18 adds Indigenous Identity as a protected ground against discrimination in the BC Human Rights Code.
While racial discrimination was already a protected ground, the change ensures Indigenous protection under the code.
Bill 29 amends the Interpretation Act to make it clear that all provincial laws uphold and do not diminish the rights of Indigenous Peoples as defined in the UN Declaration.
The new legislation was announced following months of civil unrest, protests, and rallies over a number of issues relating to the recognizing of Indigenous jurisdictional rights and consultation.
