Early assumptions that children were safe from Covid are falling apart as of late.
Last week saw 550 cases of Covid-19 recorded among those aged 5 to 11 in BC, according to Dr Bonnie Henry.
Of those cases, 56 ended up in hospital, and four in critical care.
Dr Henry says the rise in cases in youth of late is a result of high transmission in less vaccinated communities, such as the Northeast.
She did give some positive info though, noting that cases are dropping among those aged 9 to 11, after seeing a spike just after the launch of the school year.
On Tuesday, the United States approved the Pfizer vaccine for use in those aged 5 and up, with Canada expected to follow suit soon.
