The province of BC is sending an application to the federal government to try and get the possession and use of small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use decriminalized.
This move was announced earlier today and it makes BC the first province to look for some sort of Health Canada exemption under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
If the government approves the application, the allowable amount of these drugs that could be used is 4.5 grams and it would only be allowed for people 19 years of age and older.
Sheila Malcolmson, BC’s Mental Health and Addictions Minister, gave a statement saying that taking away criminal punishment for drug users is a big key for stopping this crisis.
