A Northern BC First Nation is putting its foot down when it comes to forestry activities on their territory.
In an effort to return to their more traditional forms of forestry, the Saik’uz Nation is demanding immediate changes to forestry management on their land.
Last Friday, the Nation announced that they would no longer allow any resource development projects to take place on their territory, without first acquiring their free and informed consent.
According to the Nation, located just west of Prince George, they are not against forestry, but rather in favour of sustainability.
The declaration is a result of the area’s old-growth forests being nearly wiped out, according to the Nation.
