Following weeks of ridicule and backlash, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finally paid a visit to Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc territory today.
Prior to September 30th, the Nation had sent two invitations to Trudeau to attend ceremonies on the first ever Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Chief Rossanne Casimir says that, instead of receiving the hand of sympathy they hoped for, they were met with disbelief.
Casimir welcomed the Prime Minister to their territory today, saying that it was their ancestors wish to work with Canada and share their culture, and she wants to continue to do that together.
Trudeau says he deeply regrets the decision to reject the invitations in favour of travel.
In addition, Trudeau says he regrets that his decision became a distraction that pulled attention away from the importance the day was supposed to represent.
