Earlier in the week, Canada’s Federal Court squashed Ottawa’s attempt at avoiding compensation payments to Indigenous children.
Today, Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald called the decision “justice in action for Indigenous children”.
Canada had argued that the Tribunal which came to the decision overstepped their boundaries in ruling that they had to pay billions in compensation.
Chief Archibald says that First Nations in this country have “repeatedly made a reasonable and fair request for Canada to stop fighting Indigenous children in court”.
She says that it is the only way to move forward with truth and reconciliation, and create a healing path for children.
