A long awaited Federal Court decision which came down today marks justice in the eyes of many Indigenous children.
Today the Federal Court dismissed a judicial review initially requested by Ottawa in 2019.
That review was to look in to a human rights tribunal which found Canada liable for billions in compensation to Indigenous children.
Initially the tribunal ordered them to pay 40 thousand dollars to each child who suffered under the on-reserve child welfare system since 2006.
Furthermore, the tribunal ordered Ottawa responsible for equal payments to children denied coverage by the Jordan’s Principle between December of 2007 and 2017.
The Federal Government argued that the tribunal had out stepped their boundaries, and that they had already increased funding and made institutional changes in response.
According to the Court, the Attorney General’s case did not succeed in establishing that the compensation decision is unreasonable.
